Why is Acoustical Texture on my Plaster Ceiling?

Ahhh....acoustic ceiling texture. Ain't it grand?

Whenever I see this (or some heavy-handed 'knock-down' psuedo stucco-type texture) on a ceiling or wall in a plaster home I'm thinking: 'What were they trying to hide?'

Well, I don't generally have to think TOO hard because generally its pretty obvious.

A casual, critical glance at the ceiling usually reveals cracks coming THROUGH the added texture. Already.

You see, adding texture to a cracked ceiling or wall simply won't make the problem go away for long. Often cracks reappear within a year or two of application.

Now you have to either try to match the texture or remove it all and go back to a flat ceiling (the later being my preference). And this is actually MORE work...thus costing more than if you had simply dealt with the initial problem.

So by adding texture (or wall paper!) to temporarily hide problems (as is often done when people get a house ready to sell) actually now compounds the problem, which was generally, at the beginning, a fairly simple fix.

Cracks don't have to come back if your plaster repair expert knows what he's doing.

Of course, that is the big problem...there are few plaster repair people who actually know what their are doing, so its hard to blame homeowners who just want the problem to go away. They may not be able to find anyone to actually fix the problem.
